Walkways keeping you safe in industrial areas
A place for everything and everything in its place!
This adage also applies to humans in an industrial environment. If walkways are provided, it is important that you use them as they have been designed to separate you from the hazards that may exist off the walkways.
These hazards may include forklift trucks, overhead cranes and process and plant hazards.
Do not enter a work area unless authorised and inducted. If you are a visitor to a site you will always be supervised and it is critical to do as instructed and keep to the walkways and not enter a work area unless escorted by a responsible authorised employee.
Make yourself aware of the various demarcation methods that may be employed. In some plants walkways are painted a specific colour e.g. green or blue.
Some environments do not cater for paint and so lines or pictograms of feet etc may be used. Work areas may also be painted or marked or it may just be that if it is not a walkway then it is a work area.
Ensure you are familiar with the site system and ask questions at the induction.
Remember all incidents and injuries are preventable. The better planned and prepared we are, the less likelihood of an incident.
